I am constantly on Wikipedia seeking information. I have been using it for over three years. I think that as with all types of wikis. Wikipedia is a good thing with one major drawback. Because anyone can add to it, it's too easy for incorrect or undesirable information to end up on the wiki. I still think that even with the lay person having power to contribute to the wiki, there should still be someone facilitating all activity. In applying this to the media specialist, it means that the specialist must be cognizant of what is being put on the wiki.
Page 31 of the Courtney book also makes a valid point. It may not be in your best interest to have a wiki at all. A library doesn't need a wiki just because everyone else is getting one. Before starting a wiki the media specialist should ask there is need for such an interactive Website. If the answer is yes then one must be prepared to check daily to be sure that all additions are acceptable. Wikis are good tools for giving a voice to the library user, but libraries that have them also have a great deal of responsibility in overseeing them.
