Video Distribution System and GPB Resources

As I stated in a previous post, I have spent many volunteer hours this semester in an elementary school media center and a high school media center. Both media centers have distribution systems. In the elementary school this consist of a tower of 6 VCR machines and a distribution machine that the teachers can call from there rooms and put a number in and can view VCR tapes directly in their classrooms. This is the same for the high school although there are more VCR machines. In both the elementary and high schools the distribution system is rarely used. Teachers are moving away from VCR tapes and using more DVDs in their classrooms. They also have their own DVD players in their own classrooms. At the high school some of the VCR machines are broken and are not going to be fixed. Both schools can access cable through these systems, but again it is rarely used.

Both school media centers have access to GPB and give each teacher a log in and password for accessing this website. Videos, from United Streaming, can be downloaded directly to a teachers computer from there and burned on to a CD for future use. I found at both schools teachers use this resource, particularly in the social studies classes.

  1. Yes, United Streaming and GPB have wonderful resources. We need to remind teachers (as you suggest in your blog) to download the productions to their hard drive so as not to overwhelm the band-width stream for the entire school. We need to make sure that this is part of our orientation material for teachers at the beginning of the school year. And we need to make sure that we follow all the copyright laws. Just some thoughts since, as you write in your blog, these are wonderful resources and are well-liked by the teachers.
